Biographical note
Mr. Morar has over 25 years’ experience of working on communication based train control and railroad signalling systems digitalization. Currently Project Design Authority, (UK Projects, Thales Canada Transportation Solutions) for the LUL Four Line Upgrade Program (4LM). He has been involved on the 4LM from concept design, implementation, testing and commissioning. Mr. Morar has worked on a number of large and complex re signaling with CBTC projects including LUL Jubilee and Norther Lines Upgrade Project, London Dockland Light Railway, San Francisco MUNI and GoA4 projects such as Kuala Lumpur, Vancouver Skytrain Upgrade. He has also worked on Hong Kong West Rail and people movers such as Newark airport, Jacksonville, and Las Vegas Monarail.
Presentation: Improve urban mobility via re-signalling with the CBTC signalling system
This presentation demonstrates the benefits of re-signalling with CBTC and the challenges of upgrading a system while maintaining passenger service. It examines the recent cases of re-signalling large and complex conventional signalling systems to CBTC systems, such as London Underground Jubilee and Northern lines. The re-signaling result of Jubilee and Northern Lines have made profound improvement on passenger journey experience with significant increases in passenger carrying capacity and increased train service frequency and reduction of passenger journey time. This triggers a positive cycle for both the operator and passengers. It clearly demonstrates how a well-planned re-signaling with CBTC generates high return from the existing infrastructure. The presentation also addresses the challenges and lessons learned from re-signalling old infrastructure while maintaining daily heavy passenger service, particularly when integrating with rolling stock replacement/ refurbishment, control centre modernisation, passenger information system upgrades, and enhancements to backbone data communications network. The presentation will also cover some of the new operation and technical trends in digitalization insertion via re-signalling project, such as the 300 km London’s Four Lines Modernization (4LM Project).
