Presentation:The Role of Account Based Systems in Developing Successful Fare Collection Operations
Fare collection in mass transit has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Paying cash for paper tickets evolved into magnetic stripe tickets. A few years later many transit authorities migrated to automated fare collection systems through contactless smartcards, or are currently considering to move. Nowadays the attitude is increasing the role of back end systems while presenting the users a wide variety of front end applications and simplifying the front end devices.
We are going to discuss the benefits of an account based system and its provisions to the front end systems. What are the applications based on account based system, their limitations, how transit operators can create a successful ticketing bundle without interaction to cash using these benefits?
Account based infrastructure provides a baseline for multiple front end systems and applications. Innovative fare collection methods like mobile ticketing, host based fare calculation are just the tip of the iceberg and indeed get their strength from the well-organized account based back end system.
We are aiming to discuss with this presentation what the best ticketing mix that takes the advantage of account based systems is, while lowering the need to use a complex front end equipment set. The benefits of host base calculations and mobile ticketing will be discussed with the complexity that an account based system brings to the host side. A successful ticketing system should cover major subjects like, account management, defining a credit or debit account, purchasing the right fare product, activation of the product, validation of a product, anti-fraud mechanisms, fare calculation process at the host and security.
We are going to share travel information examples as part of the mobile ticketing, host fare calculation and other solutions that we developed.
Transit operators need to decide which fare collection methods can help their service quality while approaching their customers and in the meantime protect and increase their revenue. This presentation aims to proof not only one method can be used but a successful mix can really generate more revenue, less cost and higher ridership in public transport.
