Presentation: Public Transport as instrument for the revitalization of deprived neighbourhoods
Cities are centres of social and economic activity, however their socio-spatial development are in constant flux. To meet goals for the revitalisation of deprived urban areas, the concurrent development of a well-integrated public transport (PT) offer is vital. PT then becomes central for efficient urban accessibility and mobility. To delve deeper within this theme, The UITP Transport & Urban Life Commission has set out in investigating the core question of how PT can become an instrument of revitalization, development, and social inclusion. This presentation will showcase examples of deprived urban areas that have been regenerated and explain the role public transport has played in this revitalisation. It will further give an overview of the different measures that can be taken by public transport companies in order to contribute to better connectivity, economic development, intermodality and social inclusion.
