Pere CALVET

Biographical note:
Pere Calvet Tordera is a Barcelona – born Civil Engineer that has over 30 years of experience on the Public Transport Sector. Most of his career has been linked to the urban rail, both metropolitan and suburban railway systems. He played an important role as Projects Director of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (1998 – 2008) in the modernisation of the regional suburban rail network. Before this position Mr. Calvet had been appointed as deputy-director of the planning and Studies Division and head of the Fixed Installations Division. As General Technical Director of Ifercat (Regional Rail Infrastructure Management Company) Mr. Calvet played a key role on the opening of the first section of Barcelona’s “Line 9” metro project, one of the most important projects in public transport in Europe. Despite the technical, operational and financial challenges the opening was a success and Line 9 still stands as a world-class reference on automated metro. Since 2011 Mr. Calvet is General Manager of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, in charge of three metro lines in Barcelona, several regional and suburban lines and feeder bus services (beyond other business and transport modes including funiculars, rack railways and ski resorts!). Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya has been constantly ranked amongst the most efficient and quality delivering public transport companies not only in Europe but all over the world. Besides his role as General Manager of FGC, Mr. Calvet is member of the executive board of the Barcelona Transport Authority (Autoritat del Transport Metropolità, ATM), member of the board of ATUC (Spanish Association of Urban Transport Companies) and chairman of the BCNRail (Barcelona International Railway Industry Show). These positions have allowed Mr. Calvet to gain a broad view of the public transport sector, from the industry perspective to the public service approach. Alongside with his personal involvement and knowledge on the public transport systems, Mr. Calvet has been actively involved in UITP since May 1997. Over these 20 years, he has played several roles within the organization, mostly within the metro assembly. Mr. Calvet is currently Vice-President of the UITP and, since 2015, Chairman of the Metropolitan Railways Assembly.
