Presentation: Relocation of Midland Station
This pecha kucha presentation covers the planning of the relocation of Midland Station in Perth, Western Australia. Perth’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA), the municipal government and politicians lobbied to build a new station 600m to the east, in a new redevelopment area. This move poses major challenges. Midland is a low socio economic area and was an industrial area. To create social transition the MRA created a land use master plan guiding significant government and private investment. I describe our experience in gaining the cooperation and buy-in of stakeholders; linking efficient transport outcomes with positive land use outcomes. The station design must integrate with the existing freight rail, connect to the future railcar depot, address safety issues at level crossings and ensure linkages to the cycling network.
