Presentation: Reducing energy consumption and generating a smart grid revenue stream within an electrified rail environment
Through train regenerative braking, an Energy Storage System (ESS) recovers lost energy, momentarily stores it, and then feeds this energy to the transit’s electrical network. The ESS can also provide voltage support, shave peak power and lower demand charges. Another value stacking opportunity is the ability to participate in the wholesale electricity markets by providing behind-the-meter smart grid services.  Not only does the ESS save energy and reduce a transit authority’s utility bill, it can also generate an additional revenue stream from the utility grid ancillary services market.
