The largest metro maintenance facility operated by Société de transport de Montréal (STM), the Youville workshops, houses all preventive maintenance and major refurbish activities.
Here, STM performs periodic overhauls on metro cars and carries out mechanical, electronic and electrical maintenance work, using a number of processes, from machining, welding, painting, washing, sandblasting and woodworking to magnetic particle detection.
In the past five years, STM undertook a number of changes to integrate the new AZUR cars while keeping up with maintenance on its MR-73 rolling stock. The work to upgrade the facility required major changes to existing infrastructure and the acquisition of new equipment. Today, STM enjoys state-of-the-art train maintenance installations and facilities built on standards of sustainability.
During this tour, visitors will:
- Go through all steps in minor metro maintenance, including the preventive replacement of certain parts, inspection and rotation of tires, and tour the wooden brake shoe shop, unique to Montréal.
- Go to the workshop where AZUR trains are assembled and checked out. By 2018, STM will take delivery of 52 new trains in all, each one consisting of nine cars.
Note: Safety boots are compulsory for the visit.
